The Dan Bau is a one-string monochord zither specifically native to Vietnam, and is one of only a few instruments uniquely Vietnamese. The other is the Dan Day. It is constructed of a long narrow sound box, with a tall curved stem made from water buffalo horn inserted at one end.
The single string runs between the sound box and a small wooden gourd (in Vietnamese, it is called "Bau") attached to the stem, or "whammy bar", called a nipper (known as "Voi Dan" in Vietnamese).
The stem is bent to change the pitch of the string. The player touches the string lightly with the heel of the hand at harmonic-producing nodal points while plucking with the fingers or plectrum. This produces the dan bau characteristic high clear and distinct sound. Once heard, cannot be mistaken for any other musical instrument .
This Dan Bau is a brand new fold-up model, and is electric-- pick-up assembly pre-installed and is decorated with beautiful pearl shell inlay on the sides depicting various Vietnamese artistic motif's. It comes with a soft black case, that can be carried by handle or shoulder strap. This Dan Bau measures approximately 108 cm extended, and 54 cm folded in half. You do not necessarily need to purchase a separate amplifier, as you can play your Dan Bau through your computer system.A small, separate amplifier will likely provide better sound however, and these can be purchased on eBay or elsewhere. This Dan Bau however, is not acoustic, and you will need some  amplification.

4. Dan Bau VCD video instruction Disk. Spoken language Vietnamese, useful for non speaking Vietnamese students to see what the instructor does, and how they do it
5. Soft, well padded carry case (very nice) with handle and shoulder strap. Note: except for the plectrum and carry case, these items are normally sold separately, and represent a value.

.Also keep in mind pearl shell has nothing to do with the sound quality of your Dan Bau. Sound quality for an electric Dan Bau has to do with the quality of the electric pickup, the type of the amplifier used, and the quality of the woods used in manufacture. Visually, all our Dan Bau's are all equally beautiful and the Dan Bau we sell are NOT MASS PRODUCED  for the tourist industry as many sold in-expensively are.
