    Description

Up for auction a hand carved wood wall plaque depicting St. George slaying the dragon.  The legend of Saint George and the Dragon tells of Saint George (died 303) taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices.  According to the legend, a dragon was terrorizing the city of Silene and to placate the beast, the city had been offering it two sheep per day.  But as the city ran out of sheep, they were forced to sacrifice youths and maidens who were chosen by lottery.  Finally, when only a few people remained, the daughter of the king drew the deadly lot. This carving shows the saint defending the princess from the dragon.
The plaque measures 6 1/16" high from top to bottom, 5 3/8" wide from side to side, 3/4" thick from front to back and weighs 11.2 ounces prior to packing for shipping.  Will 10x10x3 box.
This piece is in good used condition.  There is some staining, soiling and discoloration to the wood surface.  The main characters of St George and the dragon are cleanly executed with fine details, but the figure of the princess to the side is not as well executed.  The detailed border has some tool marks.  The edges have a couple of dents, but I don't see any cracks or slivers.  On the lower left corner you can see signs of the wood joining separating.  There is some dust and debris in the depths of the carving.
