  • Condition: Good-Very Good overall antique cond: For sale is this very scarce, mid-late 19th c Inuit, northern North America, Native American, antique sm, 4 3/4" in diameter, woven sweet grass gathering basket, w/red vegetable dyed, woven decorative accents or symbolic hieroglyphs, circumnavigating the basket's ext sidewalls. It was most likely made post-US Civil War & is c. 1875-1895. It was found in eastern, coastal ME along w/other thin-walled, finely woven sweet grass gathering/storage baskets in a grouping of over a half-dozen different forms. This particular basket, is exceptionally well-pres, less a sm interruption along its woven top rim, which is now very slightly frayed & unraveled. No attempt has been made to glue, sew or otherwise fasten this area firmly together again. The way the basket was found in the coastal Maine estate is how it was left. The basket has nat, dry, matte sweet grass surfaces & nat aged patina. Most likely Inuit made. Very lovely & nearly completely intact. Fine.
