antique small,
4 3/4"
in diameter, woven sweet grass gathering basket,
with red vegetable dyed woven decorative accents or symbolic hieroglyphs circumnavigating the basket's exterior sidewalls. It was most likely made
post-US Civil War
and is
circa 1875 to 1895.
It was found in
eastern, coastal Maine
along with other thin-walled, finely woven sweet grass gathering/storage baskets in a grouping of over a half-dozen different forms. This particular basket, is exceptionally well-preserved, less a small interruption along its woven top rim, which is now very slightly frayed and unraveled. No attempt has been made to glue, sew or otherwise fasten this area firmly together again. The way the basket was found in the
coastal Maine
estate, is how it remains and how it was left. The basket has
natural, dry, matte sweet grass surfaces and naturally aged patina.
