A bit of history:   Panteleimon (also Panteleimon [1], Greek Παντελεήμων - all-merciful), before baptism Pantoleon (Greek. Παντολ †ων) († 305 year) - Christian saint, venerated in the face of the great martyrs, healer, doctor without a price. Although there is reason to believe that a martyr named Panteleimon existed, Catholics do not recognize the authenticity of some stories from his life [2] [3]. The memory is celebrated in the Orthodox churches on July 27 according to the Julian calendar, in the Catholic Church on July 27 according to the Gregorian calendar.
Born in Nicomedia in the family of a noble pagan and received the name Pantoleon. His mother, Saint Evvula, was a Christian and raised her son in her faith, but she died. When Pantoleon was in his teens, his father sent his son to a pagan school, and then instructed the famous doctor Euphrosynus to study Pantoleon's medical art. Soon he was heard about by the Roman emperor Maximian, who wished to see Pantoleon at his court.
Elder Yermolai, who lived in Nicomedia, noticed Panteleimon and began to tell him about Christianity. According to the life, Pantoleon believed in Jesus Christ after seeing a child who died from a snakebite, he prayed to Jesus Christ resurrected him. After that, he was baptized by Elder Hermolaus and received the name Panteleimon.
Having become a medical doctor, Panteleimon deprived many doctors of his income, and he received a denunciation to Emperor Maximian that Panteleimon visits Christians in prison and treats them with the name of Christ. The emperor called Panteleimon and asked to refute the denunciation. The saint invited the emperor to call one incurable patient and arrange a trial. Whoever heals him: he or the pagan priests - that faith must be true. According to the life, the pagan priests could not heal the sick, and Panteleimon by the power of prayer granted healing to the relaxed. After this, many believed in Christ, and Maximian became hardened at Panteleimon and ordered to torture him, and then throw him with a heavy stone into the sea.
But Panteleimon remained unharmed, then he was subjected to new torment: hanged on a tree, burned with candles, then tore with iron claws, wheeled, thrown into boiling tin, tried to drown in the sea. The wild beasts with which he was torn to pieces licked his legs.
After all the torment, Panteleimon was sentenced to beheading. They tied him to an olive tree and wanted to chop off his head, but the saint began to pray, and the sword did not harm him. During prayer, a voice from heaven called Panteleimon to the kingdom of heaven, and the saint asked the soldiers to fulfill their order. According to the life, when his head was chopped off, milk instead of blood flowed from the wound, and the olive was immediately covered with fruits. The body of the great martyr thrown into the fire did not burn out and was buried by Christians.
The head of Panteleimon is kept in the Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos. Particles of the relics of the saint are in many cities of Russia. In the Orthodox Church Panteleimon is revered as the patron saint of warriors (his pagan name Pantoleon is translated as “a lion in everything”), and also as a healer, which is associated with his second Christian name Panteleimon - “all-merciful”.
