    Russian Orthodox Icon "Saint Nicholas Wonder Worker with life scenes". Russia, icon painted in 19th century. Tempera, gesso, hand painted on silver leaf. Size 35 x 31 cm (13.8" x 12.2" x 1"). The icon depicts St. Nicolas the Wonder-worker blessing with his right hand, with the book of Gospels in his left hand. St. Nicholas, the archbishop of Mira in Lycia in the IV century, was celebrated as great venerator of God. St. Nicolas is revered as protector of seafarers and travellers, as a helper of the poor and of the condemned innocent. This icon contains a half - length representation of the Saint, and in the left and right sides Christ and the Virgin blessing Saint Nicolas with the Gospel and omophor. In Saint’s gospel is written: “at that time he stood on a level place and a great multitude of his disciples, and a great number of ether people from all Judaea and Jerusalem and the sea coast of Tyre and “(Luke, 6.17). There are 12 life scenes of Saint Nicholas at the sides of the icon. Good quality painting. Executed in traditional style. Very rare and nice piece of religious art. The certificate is available upon request from Lithuanian Culture Department testifying the authenticity and age of the icon.
