    Description

    This listing is for a
    1740-B French Colonies Sou Marque
    graded by
    PCGS
    as
    MS-63
    .  Struck in billon (
a relatively soft alloy of silver, copper, and tin that, in its most desirable form, simulates coins that are predominantly or entirely silver)
.  Vlack-51.  R-3.  French Colonies billon coinage was minted from 1709 through 1760 at various French mints, although usually in Paris.  The 1740 date often circulated in North America among colonists.
The softness of the billon alloy leads to many examples displaying prominent flan flaws as does the present piece from the reverse border at 3 o'clock through the D and into the lower right field.
This silver-gray example shows mostly bright and sharp surfaces with only a trace of planchet roughness
    .
